Family Reunions

Recently, I attended my family reunion for 2008. Most of the immediate family and extended family as well as many friends showed up for the fun events. The weeklong activities included a picnic, a day at the beach, casino night, golfing, the amusement park and just hanging out reminiscing about the days past. Like most family reunions, nephews, nieces, cousins, aunts and uncles, in-laws and especially the kids, have all matured; many of them no longer kids but now young adults. Oh what a joy is was to see so many people happy to be together again. Old wounds, clashes, disagreements and differences all squashed for the sake of love for family. It was like being home again from days past. Reminiscing about the loved ones that use to be with us but were not in attendance this time. They have gone home to a better place.

Which brings me to the video "Home" best sung by Stephanie Mills. The song touches on the story of peace, quiet and serenity. A journey where family--moms, dads, sons and daughters, aunt and uncles, cousins, spouses and other love ones who are no longer with us in this life but are not forgotten. The concert video was recorded live in 1998 at Sinbad's Summer Jam in Aruba; an annual event where many attended from around the world. The tropical festivals took place for five consecutive summers from 1995 to 1999. All came to party and see live performances from 70's soul artist that made hits from back in the day. It was like a big family reunion that unfortunately ended after the 1999 concert. The five-year run was also featured on HBO.

We can all have peace, quiet and serenity with our loved ones now. Don't let the opportunity pass you by. Attend your next family reunion. Or, if one has not been planned, then take charge by inviting everyone home for the next family reunion because like Stephanie Mills sings, "There's no place like home!"
